Karla Romero, LVN – HEALTH SERVICES MANAGER

As a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Karla Romero has provided exceptional nursing support for Origins Recovery Center and Hannah’s House residential patients undergoing drug and alcohol detoxification since September 2011 before moving into her new role as Health Services Manager. Additionally, she has worked with pediatric patients and those with arthritis and osteoporosis. Karla graduated in 2016 from Texas Southmost College in Brownsville with her Associate Degree in Nursing after receiving her LVN from Texas State Technical College in Harlingen in 2011 and completing the Medical Assistant Program at Career Centers Brownsville in 2007.

What brought you to Origins?

Back in 2011- A fellow nurse from Origins (shout out to Chelsey, who still works there) went to nursing school with me and spoke about her new job there. The way she talked about what Origins was about and how Origins was helping people – it stuck with me. I applied shortly after that. It opened my eyes to the field of addiction.

If there was only one thing you could tell us about working within your specialty area, what would it be?

I would tell others how wrong people are about those suffering from addiction. One of the best parts of working in this field is that, as nurses, we take care of you from the very beginning and see you at your most vulnerable.

What have you learned through your experience working in treatment?

I have seen what can happen when people put in the work. While the medical team gets the patient medically stable, the next part is important, and getting there is up to the patient. There are no guarantees, but I have seen firsthand what can happen when they do the work, follow the advice, and do what is recommended of them.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I like to go on walks and love taking pictures constantly. I also enjoy traveling with my family. My husband and I have been traveling with our children since they were very young, and it brings me joy to share these experiences with them.
