Staff Spotlight – Casey Mckeown

Sep 22, 2021

Casey Mckeown  – Alumni Care Coordinator

What brought you to the field of addiction treatment? What brought you to Origins?

I wanted to work in treatment because of my recovery journey. I went to a treatment center like Origins, where 12-Step Recovery Advocates (RAs) and many other staff members were in recovery. I remember their impact and how hearing their recovery stories and wisdom made a huge difference in my life. What brought me to Origins was my passion for the lifesaving 12-Steps. I believe in programs like Hannah’s House because the 12-Steps worked for me and thousands of others without a path out of their mental obsessions.

If there was only one thing you could tell us about working within your specialty area, what would it be?

Alumni care is an amazing part of my job because I get to talk to patients, keep track of where they are, and see how they are doing. I love connecting with these women when they leave and helping them in sober living, even if they trip or get stuck. My passion is helping others. Because of God and the 12-Steps, I get to wake up every morning and help others like me, and that’s the great part of this job.

What have you learned through your experience working in treatment?

I have learned so much while working at Origins, such as reaffirming my belief that God will heal those of us who feel hopeless. Watching light bulbs turn on in lives at any given moment is the best part.

Do you hold any credentials or certifications?

I graduated from the University of Wyoming with my bachelor’s in psychology, but I am going back to school this year. Because I received my degree during my addiction, my GPA is not the best. I plan on getting my master’s in some form of counseling to help others like myself who are trying to walk this journey of recovery.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I love going to the beach with my dog, Cyrus, paddle boarding, and painting — things I never knew were possible until I found God and the 12-Steps. God has allowed me to become more present and enjoy my life. I had Cyrus in my addiction, and I desperately wanted him back in my life, but I first needed to learn how to live again. Once I realized this and began living my amends, I could show up for him in ways I could not have done in the past. Once I was sober for about a year, getting Cyrus and my car back were blessings. I will never forget the moment he was back in my life. It was a struggle to stay committed, follow through, and do the next right thing, but everything fell into place. I thank God every day for the life he has provided me.
